Re: Time to reclaim this Country of ours.
Are Greek, Latin, Norman words etc not from around the world? Or does those territories lie within England?

The fact still remains that a vast number of words in our language hail from around the globe from areas such as the Americas, Asia and Africa. And given that those words from those areas are part of our language, our language therefore is a collection of words from around the world.

Wake me up when you realise that English is an international entity with a relation to anyone who considers themselves an English national that is far from direct or straightforward.

You're wrong again. English is the recognised universal language of science.

Coy.

But we haven't got a problem with too many Japanese. Chinese will soon be a different matter though.

So. Norman, and used to describe a concept. Pretty much as I said.

Re: Time to reclaim this Country of ours.
Greek and Latin are the universal language of science. Almost all of the words used today either came to us through the Normans or were later coined by English-speaking (or French or German) scientists.

Tell you what, when you are using a word that originates from China or Korea as often as one from Germany or France come back and have the conversation again.

Assimilate...late Middle English: from Latin assimilat- 'absorbed, incorporated', from the verb assimilare

I think I read that only 30% of the words in the common Dictonary are of Anglo-saxon origin.

So, 70% of our language is from further afield?

If our language is only derived from the countries who have invaded us, then how do you account for the vast amount of Greek words in our language, or words that originate from the vast numbers of countries around the world who haven't invaded us?

Yes, mate.

Any news on that platano-skin you just slipped up on?

The English words and people travelled to the island from other places, over many many centuries, even millenia.

On that much, we can all agree.

The idea that th English language is a collection of words picked up from round the world is total bollocks.

Tell you what is a load of bollox - the idea of a nation as object, or if you like a thing with a physical presence and definite stable characteristics we all experience in the same way. Neither is it a subject, in the way you and I are when we act or make a choice. All constructs that begin with ideas of the nation as an agent or thing are not only junk, but dangerous junk.

Er. No. What Swiss said.

English is not a cozy demonstration of the benefits of multiculturalism. It's a demonstration of what happens when one country conquers another by force of arms a long time ago.

Re: Time to reclaim this Country of ours.
Anyway, for the first time ever 3rd generation immigrants do not have English as their first language. For me mass immigration has always been a cultural problem and not a colour problem.

Re: Time to reclaim this Country of ours.
Yes. I think I mentioned assimilated words. It's not really that much of a leap to understand that the name of a fruit (or herb, to be accurate) not grown in this country might have the name it was given where it was grown.

Thanks for admitting that banana is not a Spanish word.
